YATSUSHIRO MYOKENSAI

The Yatsushiro Myoken Shrine grand festival in autumn. Since the blooming of the townsmen culture in the Genroku era (late 17th century), ideas such as the lion dance and the Kida (a turtle with the head of a snake) have been elaborated and lavish performances are presented. The climax of the festival is the Kazari-uma Enbu, featuring beautifully decorated horses. The event is a competition based on unity between the horses and their groups of handlers. As one of the three major festivals of Kyushu, it is designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.
